The Compass Rose Lodge consistently receives positive feedback, praised for its peaceful atmosphere, beautiful design, and attentive staff. Guests highlight the observatory experience and the unique charm of the property, particularly noting the quiet environment and cozy rooms. While some reviews mention operational hiccups and a potential mismatch between price and experience, the overwhelming sentiment is one of a memorable and relaxing getaway.
WOW. This place rules. Had my 40th birthday party there recently and everything was perfect. The GM, Ashely, was superb. She answered all our questions and made sure we had a great time. The Halo astronomy experience was amazing, even with a larger group. Both guides were funny and very informative. The rooms were beautiful, the private room was cozy and the town is cute. Truly, this was a wonderful experience and the Compass Rose Lodge helped me have a very memorable birthday. Thanks to everyone that we worked with. Stay here, have a party, visit, whatever you need to do to come check it out.
We had an outstanding weekend at the Compass Rose Lodge. From the moment we arrived, the entire property felt peaceful, beautifully designed, and thoughtfully cared for. The staff was welcoming and genuinely attentive without ever feeling overbearing. Every part of the lodge has a quiet, refined charm — from the warm common spaces to the clean, comfortable rooms that feel both modern and cozy. The setting is incredible. It’s the perfect place to relax, reset, and feel tucked away without being remote. We loved the atmosphere, the attention to detail, and the overall vibe. You can tell the owners really take pride in creating a memorable experience for their guests. We left feeling refreshed and already talking about when we can come back. Highly recommend the Compass Rose Lodge to anyone looking for a peaceful, top-notch getaway.
We wished we were staying an additional night! Scott gave us an amazing sky tour in the observatory, and included morning coffee and croissant was amazing!
Compass lodge was amazing. Everyone was so nice, the rooms were great and Scott at the Observatory was very knowledgeable and made our tour an enjoyable experience. Thanks to everyone. We will return… Oh and I be of the best things was how quiet it was?
Beautiful location, quiet, clean rooms, and great customer service :) we will definitely come again! Also, the coffee shop/cafe is so yummy!
I booked a couple of nights here for my mom for her 70th birthday. every interaction I had with the staff was amazing and the went above and beyond to make my mom's weekend special. I got to take a peek at her room and it was immaculate just like the rest of the hotel. the vibe was cozy and clean. they have an elevator and serve breakfast sandwiches in the morning. I love huntsville and now that ive found compass rose i think i might have to give myself a mini getaway very soon.
This was the weirdest hotel stay I have ever had. It felt like "getting the Instagrammable vibe" was more important than hospitality; if anything, I felt like a burden. I got there 2 hours before what I assumed was check-in (based on my "arrival time" when I booked). They let me check in anyway. Great! I asked about the observatory tour, was told it was full... but since it was just me, they'd make room. I was also told breakfast is included except they would be closed for Easter, so they put frozen-type burritos in the mini fridge. Microwave in common area. Also great. Dinner rolls around; not many options in the square, coffee shop closes at 4. Cool. I'll eat frozen burrito...not. The refrigerator isn't cold at all, burritos mushy. Tell the front desk guy; he takes a note. No offer to look at it or give me somewhere to store perishables. 12 minutes later at the grocery store, I buy jerky, bananas, and cup noodles... 9pm for the observatory tour: 5 minutes...15 minutes pass... and the "full tour" mentioned at check-in was actually the guide bringing his friends. They bailed, and forgot about me. Front desk guy is nice, but grumbling how bad he wanted the guide to show up so he could leave. They get the on-call guy to give me the tour, but the clouds had rolled in, so not much to see. The mirrored telescope was disassembled, and no pictures that the observatory had taken were shown. Tour ends. On-call guy (Scott) tells me the refrigerator has an "on" switch and the person that put the burritos in there never turned it on. I was also informed, I will be the only person on the whole property after he left. No desk attendants and apparently no other guests were there. It's cool. I told him I'm not skeered. Could have used an additional blanket though. Unsurprisingly, no one was there when I checked out. Who this stay is for: independent travelers who want to unplug in a comfy room. At $275+ a night... this felt more like a pricey hostel instead of a hotel. Overall, it was fine, (could have been weird due to the holiday), but I could see this may not pass muster for everyone.
Room was beautiful and clean. We stayed here in the winter and loved the cozy room with a view of snow falling. Bed was comfortable, loved the coffee shop downstairs and the decorations throughout. Only complaint would be the heater/AC unit was very loud and squeaky. Woke us up a few times throughout the night.
We came up last night for a solar experience (we did not spend the night so i cant review the accomodations that way). My experience was better than I hoped, and was also a lot of fun! I learned a lot throughout the night. I would highly recommend making reservations and learning more about our incredible solar system, the planets, stars, and constellations. Scott is a very good, and personable, instructor. Thank you so much for the great experience. Vickie Vega
My wife and I stayed here while skiing at snowbasin last February. What a fabulous find! Very unique. It was quiet and relaxing. A very different experience from the big resort towns. Everyone we met was super kind and helpful. We will definitely be back.
